What is a “travel app”?

I think it’s any app that will make your travels easier. This can be anything from an app that helps you find the best airfares to an app that allows you to keep track of your documents. I’ve compiled eight apps here that I think are the best to have on your cell phone when traveling.

There are a lot of travel apps out there, but you know what? Not all of them are worth your time. And when you’re traveling, time is money. So, I’ve put together this list of the 8 travel apps that you should have on your phone. These are the ones I use regularly, and they’ve helped me save money, stay safe and make my trips more enjoyable.

Accommodations: Airbnb

You probably already know about Airbnb by now, but just in case you don’t it’s an online marketplace where people can rent out their homes or spare rooms to travelers (and visa versa!). You can book everything from an entire house to a private bedroom in someone’s home. It’s a great way to see a new city like a local and get some insight into the best places to go and things to do.

I also love Airbnb because it allows me to rent entire apartments for less than the price of a hotel room at most major cities. This is how I managed to stay in Paris for less than $50 per night!

I love traveling and exploring new places. It’s amazing how many new things you can learn from the people you meet, the food you eat, and the places you visit. But in order to travel, you have to plan ahead: buy tickets, book hotels, etc. I’m always looking for ways to make these processes easier.

I was recently in London and was able to do just that with a few apps on my phone. Here are eight travel apps I think every traveler should have on their phones:

Hopper: This app is amazing if you are trying to find the cheapest flight possible! The app tracks prices for tickets and sends you alerts when prices drop. I used it last month to find a cheap ticket from Chicago to London (under $650 roundtrip!).

Skyscanner: This is another great app for finding cheap flights! I like using it because it finds different airports around your selected city of departure and shows you the price differences between them. For example, I found a cheap ticket from Chicago to London by flying out of O’Hare instead of Midway.

The biggest problem with apps is that there are just so many of them. It can be hard to sort through the fray and find the good stuff — there’s a lot of junk out there.

Recently, I’ve been asked quite a few times what apps I use to make my travels easier. So, I decided to put together a list of my favorite apps that I couldn’t live without when traveling. Because honestly, when you are in a foreign country and you don’t know the language or the area, your smartphone is your best friend.

Skyscanner

I’m sure most travelers have heard of this app by now. It’s one of the most popular flight search engines available – and it’s free! Skyscanner allows you to search for flights as well as hotels. In addition, they have recently launched a new feature – car rental searches! The feature has not been added to their app yet but it is available on their desktop version of the website.

1. Airfarewatchdog

Airfarewatchdog is one of the most popular airfare search engines, and is a site I frequent when I’m looking for cheap flights. It has unique features like fare alerts, deal hound, and destination maps to assist you in your flight search. This is a great app to have on hand when searching for last minute deals and when you are flexible with travel dates.

2. Word Lens

If you can’t read street signs or menus in foreign countries, Word Lens will be a lifesaver! How it works is that your phone camera “reads” the sign or menu and translates into English (or the language of your choice). It isn’t perfect, but it will get the job done.

3. Kayak Pro

Kayak Pro is one of the best travel apps out there, and definitely what I use most often when planning trips (besides Google Flights). It offers an easy-to-use interface to find flight prices and hotel rates around the world, as well as a currency converter and packing list. You can also look at airport terminal maps (which comes in handy if you are changing planes) and airport security wait times so that you can plan accordingly.

The best part about the app is that it can curate suggestions for you. When you’re planning your trip, simply put in your destination and dates and the app will create a suggested itinerary based on recommendations from TripAdvisor users. The itineraries can include a few days worth of things to do and places to see, so you can easily organize your time when traveling.

The app also has a Near Me Now feature that allows you to find local attractions, restaurants and more based on your location. If you’re looking for inspiration for your next trip, the app also has a Today’s Top Deals section that highlights travel deals around the world.
