9 Low-Cost Cities to Visit During the Holidays


Every year, millions of people travel to visit family and friends during the holiday season. If you are one of those people, then you know that the cost of airfare and lodging increase as demand rises. The following are nine cities that are worth visiting during the holidays at low-cost.

Everyone wants to visit a low-cost city during the holiday season, but where are they? The question is pretty tough to answer. Some cities are generally more expensive than others, but the price of airfare and hotel rooms changes all the time.

Their prices are so variable that we don’t even know how much a trip will cost until three or four months beforehand, never mind six or seven. But there are ways to get a general idea of what’s likely to be cheap and what’s likely to be expensive.

To start, we looked at which cities have historically been the least expensive to visit during the week of Christmas, based on a recent 10-year analysis by Kayak **(see below)**. Then we cross-referenced those with places that travel experts recommend visiting in 2017.

The result is our list of nine affordable destinations for this holiday season—and possibly next year’s, too!

As the holidays approach, you may be wondering where to go over the Christmas break. While many of us think of that time as a chance to go on vacation or travel somewhere far away from home, it’s also a great opportunity to spend time in cities close to home.

Some cities can be expensive to visit, but there are plenty of low-cost cities that you can visit for less than $100 per day. Here are a few of our favorite cheap holiday destinations:

Indianapolis, Indiana

Indianapolis is one of the cheapest cities in the country. It has several popular museums and attractions including The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Another inexpensive museum worth visiting is the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, which is only about a mile from the center of town. If you like sports, Indianapolis offers numerous golf courses and an NCAA Hall of Champions. Other places to check out include The Indianapolis Zoo and White River State Park. To create this list we looked at domestic and international destinations that had the lowest average airfare from December 20th to January 4th, 2016. For reference, Hopper’s December average for domestic flights is $188 and $721 for international flights. The prices mentioned below are roundtrip fares, including taxes and fees, per person for economy class based on historical data aggregated by Hopper.

If you’re hoping to score a cheap flight this holiday season, you may want to pick up your bags and head to New York City.

New York is the cheapest city to visit during the holidays, according to a new report from Cheapflights.com. The average round-trip airfare there is $620.15, 24 percent cheaper than the national average of $816.98 for flights between Dec. 18 and Jan. 4.

“You don’t have to be a finance whiz or travel expert to know that December is one of the most expensive times for airlines,” according to the report, which cited rising prices around Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve as factors in driving up airfares during that time period.

In fact, only four cities on Cheapflights’ list had average airfares above the national average: Honolulu ($1,087), San Francisco ($971), Boston ($899) and Anchorage ($893).

If you’re looking for a winter escape, consider booking a trip to one of these affordable cities from around the world.
