Most airlines operate a hub-and-spoke system whereby flights from many cities converge on a central hub city. Each airline may have multiple hubs, and many of the largest airports in the world are the hubs for one or more airlines. Here is a list of the top 25 cities for airline travel, along with helpful details about each hub.

Atlanta – Hartsfield International Airport (ATL)

The busiest airport in the world, Atlanta’s Hartsfield International was originally a tiny field that merely served as a fueling stop for planes flying between New York and Miami. But it didn’t take long before it became clear that Atlanta was destined to be a major transit center and so the airport began to expand rapidly. While Delta Airlines has traditionally been its bread-and-butter carrier, other airlines have also made their home at Hartsfield over the years, including ValuJet (which later merged with AirTran Airways), Eastern Airlines and Pan Am. Atlanta is the world’s busiest airport, both in terms of passengers and number of flights. Fifty-one million passengers pass through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) each year, with an average of 275,000 departing and arriving passengers daily. The airport serves as a major international hub for Delta Air Lines, with more than 1,000 daily flights to destinations around the world.
