Bell 407 Production History: The Bell 407 was first introduced in 1996 at the Heli-Expo convention in Anaheim, California and is based on the successful Bell 206L-4 Long Ranger. The main difference between the two helicopters is the new Rolls Royce 250-C47 Turbomeca engine which gives the Bell 407 more power than its predecessor. The new engine allows the Bell 407 to operate at higher altitudes and lift more weight.
In 2001 the production of the Bell 407 was moved to Canada and since then over 1,100 Bell 407s have been produced with over 300 of those being sold in Europe. In 2007 a new variant of the Bell 407 was introduced called the Bell 427 which had room for 2 additional passengers. The Bell 407 uses the four-bladed, soft-in-plane, composite main rotor with a titanium hub and composite wide-chord blades and the advanced bearingless, teetering tail rotor of the 206L-4. It also features such innovations as a tapered blade design and elastomeric bearings in the rotor head. The result is an extremely smooth ride and low vibration levels.
A rigid, fully articulated main rotor system is used to reduce maintenance costs and cost of operation. The main rotor hub has no hinges or high-stress, high-maintenance dynamic seals as in conventional articulated rotor systems. As a result, blade tracking is inherently accurate without periodic adjustment. The Bell 407 is powered by a Rolls-Royce/Allison 250-C47 turboshaft engine rated at 650 shaft horsepower (HP). The Bell 407 is a member of the Bell Helicopter Textron’s Model 407 series. It is the successor of the Model 206L-4 Long Ranger IV and was first introduced in 1996. The model was developed to meet the requirements of civil operators and armed forces worldwide.
The Bell 407 has been adopted by many armed forces, police units, emergency services and commercial operators for different missions including troop transport, utility, search and rescue, surveillance and reconnaissance, firefighting, executive transport and aerial crane operations.
The Bell 407 is a four-blade, single-engine, civil utility helicopter; a derivative of the Bell 206L-4 Long Ranger. The 407 uses the four-blade, soft-in-plane design rotor with composite hub developed for the US Army’s OH-58D Kiowa Warrior rather than the two-blade semi-rigid, teetering rotor of the 206. The 407 features a four-bladed bearingless main rotor system and a four-bladed tail rotor with improved corrosion protection and fatigue resistance. It is powered by a Rolls Royce/Allison 250 C47 turboshaft engine developing 478 kW (640 shp), giving it a cruise speed of 220 km/h (137 mph).
The helicopter was announced in October 1994 and first flew on June 29 1995. Certification was received in April 1996 and the first delivery was made in May. It was initially built at Mirabel, Quebec; but production was transferred to Mississauga, Ontario shortly after its conception.
In November 2008 Bell announced that it would end production of its Bell 427 model to concentrate on its new Model 429.
