I flew the other day on United Airlines First Class from Los Angeles to San Francisco, and was reminded of why it is worth it to upgrade your airline ticket.

I don’t know about you, but I love to travel by air. I love everything about it, from the moment I walk into the airport to the time I land at my destination, and of course all the traveling in between.

I’m always trying to figure out ways to upgrade my tickets so that I can have a better experience. If you’re like me and want to know what your options are for upgrading your airline ticket, here’s five suggestions:

Get more legroom

Upgrading your seat with more leg room is probably one of the most common upgrades people get when flying. It’s worth it for those long flights because it’s just way more comfortable.

Typically, you’ll want to buy an amenities kit if you’re flying business or first class. They usually come with all kinds of goodies like socks, slippers, a blanket, and more. They’re also good because they help you feel a little more at home while you’re on-the-go.

With all the frequent flier miles you have accumulated, it’s time to use them to upgrade your airline ticket. Now, many of you may think that this is easier said than done, but I assure you it can be done. In fact, there are many reasons why you should try and use your frequent flier miles to upgrade your next airline ticket.

The first reason is because having an upgraded seat on your next flight means that you will have much more room to stretch out and relax in. After all, who wants to sit cramped up in coach when there are empty seats up in first class? Why not take advantage of the empty seats and take one for yourself? And if the airline says that they are full, ask them anyway. They might surprise you!

The world of airline upgrades is mysterious and confusing. It’s hard to know if you’re getting a good deal, or if you’re being ripped off.

Here are five things you must know before upgrading your next flight:

1) Your seat won’t be any bigger. Upgrading just means that instead of sitting in the “economy” section, you’ll be sitting in the “business class” section. This doesn’t mean your seat will be any bigger, or that you’ll get more legroom (you might not even get any more legroom).

2) You still won’t have as much legroom as someone who paid for first class. Those business class seats are still crammed into the same area as economy; it’s just that there are fewer rows and fewer seats per row — those passengers had to pay twice as much as you did.

Airline tickets are not all the same. A big part of why is frequent flier miles. Frequent fliers can often get upgrades to first class, or business class, or more leg room, etc., and these upgrades cost real money, if you don’t have miles. So when you buy a ticket, you are actually buying access to a certain set of benefits.

So don’t just buy the cheapest ticket you can find. The cheapest ticket might have very little value in terms of miles or upgrades. The most valuable ticket may not be the most expensive one — it depends on what upgrades (if any) you expect to get out of it.

The best way to think about airline tickets is as bets on your future travel plans. If you plan to travel frequently enough that your miles will add up fast, then you want a good frequent flier program; if not, then you don’t care so much. If you expect to take a lot of trips with long layovers, then a ticket with a lot of upgrade options might be worth paying extra for; if not, then it might not be worth it for you.
