Military Helicopters: These helicopters are used by governments around the world for search-and-rescue missions, special forces extractions, and as combat vehicles. They are also used by civilians for rescue missions and other high-risk jobs that require a tough and maneuverable aircraft. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but all have the same basic purpose.

Private Helicopters: These machines are owned by individuals who fly them for pleasure or business purposes. The helicopter is a type of rotorcraft in which lift and thrust are supplied by one or more engine driven rotors. This allows the helicopter to take off and land vertically, to hover, and to fly forwards, backwards, and laterally. These attributes allow helicopters to be used in congested or isolated areas where fixed-wing aircraft would usually not be able to take off or land. The capability to efficiently hover for extended periods of time allows a helicopter to accomplish tasks that fixed-wing aircraft and other forms of vertical takeoff and landing cannot perform.

Today’s military helicopters are usually the most advanced, having been designed specifically for military roles. Their missions can include transport of troops, communications, air assaults, search and rescue, and medevac roles. Examples include the Mi-17 Hip, the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk, the Boeing AH-64 Apache, the Kamov Ka-50 Hokum A/B/C/E & Ka-52 Alligator & Ka-27 Helix A & B & C, the Mil Mi-24 Hind A/D/E/F & Mi-28 Havoc B/N
