Helicopters are perhaps the most misunderstood “vehicle” in the aviation world. They have unique flying characteristics and require a special skill set to fly.
As a result, many students have misconceptions about how helicopters fly which can lead to increased frustration during training.
Before we get into the specifics of how a helicopter flies, it’s important to understand the differences between airplanes (fixed wing aircraft) and helicopters.
A helicopter is primarily designed for vertical flight. It has a main rotor that provides vertical lift and a tail rotor that provides anti-torque (anti-clockwise rotation). Those two components alone make up 80% of a helicopter’s design. The remaining 20% is composed of horizontal control surfaces (cyclic and collective) which control the direction of flight and speed respectively. These surfaces are used in conjunction with each other to translate the pilot’s input into forward, backward, left and right movement while maintaining lift (altitude).
