How to Get Cheap Airline Tickets

Here’s a trick you can use to get cheap airline tickets.

Say you want to go from New York to Los Angeles. In most cases, it will be cheapest to fly into Los Angeles and out of New York, or vice versa.

If you are flying to Hawaii, it’s usually cheapest to fly in and out of the same city—it’s just that sometimes Honolulu is cheaper than Maui and sometimes the reverse.

You can use this trick with your favorite search engine. Just do a search for round trip from A to B, then do the same search but with B as the starting point instead of A. If one flight is cheaper than its reverse, don’t forget about other airlines: sometimes switching airlines will save you money even if it means a stopover.

It’s a good idea to look at several online travel sites and compare prices. A few sites that offer great deals are:

– Kayak.com

– Momondo.com

– Expedia.com

– Orbitz.com

– Travelocity.com

– Priceline.com

– CheapOAir.com

– Skyscanner.net1

I often get asked the question: “How do you find cheap airline tickets?”

The answer is pretty simple. However, it’s not very easy to execute. It takes time, effort and patience. But the cheaper flights you’ll get by following the steps in the guide below will make it worth the effort.

Before I go on, let me say that there are no magic bullets when it comes to getting cheap airfare. If there were, these airline companies would be out of business and we’d be paying a fraction of what we’re paying now.

Also, these tips probably won’t help you get cheap tickets for last-minute travel. It’s best to plan your trips at least 2-3 weeks in advance if you want to snag an amazing deal. Otherwise, look into ALL options for last-minute travel:

* use credit card points to buy a ticket (some cards give you enough for a free round trip)

* call up friends and family and see if they plan on going anywhere or can pick you up somewhere

* take a bus or train (look at Greyhound or Amtrak)

* look at a car rental company like Hertz

During peak travel periods (Nov-Jan, March-May, and July-Aug), there is limited availability of cheap airfares on domestic flights due to high demand. If you are flexible about your travel dates and time, you can get great deals on airline tickets. However, it can be a real challenge if you have to book flights around a strict schedule for work or family obligations.

Generally speaking, you will find better prices if you are willing to fly on weekdays rather than weekends and in the early morning or late at night. And if you can avoid (or embrace) holidays—as well as spring break and summer vacation—you may save even more money. Of course, these are just general guidelines; there are always exceptions to the rule.
