How our tool Flightradar24 works?

Flightradar24 is a flight tracker, that makes it possible to view aircraft movements all over the world. In real-time. You can watch aircraft move in real-time on detailed map and search for an individual flight using the flight or tail number.

The site uses data from open sources and provides information about flights of more than 500 airlines around the world. The best way to use the service is to have a fast Internet connection, so that we can display all information quickly and without any problems.

We have gotten a lot of questions about how our flight radar works and what is the best way to use it. This blog post will give you some answers and tips on how to get the most out of it.

A lot of people do not know that Flightradar24 is an amalgamation of many receivers and antennas around the world. We receive data from a large number of sources, we have over ten thousand receivers in more than two hundred countries around the world. Our flight radar consists of both professional ADS-B receivers and software that runs on a Raspberry Pi with a USB receiver connected. The information we receive from our own global network is shared with other users within Flightradar24, so even if you don’t have your own receiver, you can still see aircraft nearby.

How does the plane icon look like?

The symbol on the map is slightly different depending on which type of aircraft it is, but also whether it’s a commercial or private aircraft. You will find more information about this in our support article What does each icon mean? It even shows how you can differentiate between different types of helicopters.

How do I search for specific flights?

There are several ways to do this, you can use our search page which allows you to search directly

How does it work?

Flightradar24 has a rapidly growing network of several thousand ground stations around the world to receive this data that then shows up as aircraft moving on a map in the app. In an expanding number of regions Flightradar24, with the help of multilateration, is able to calculate the positions of aircraft that don’t have ADS-B transponders. Flightradar24 covers most of Europe and North America as well as several other countries across the globe. At any moment there are usually several aircraft flying over your country, even if you live in a remote area without an airport nearby. These aircraft are primarily commercial passenger planes

Flightradar24 is a Swedish internet-based service that shows real-time aircraft flight information on a map. It includes flight tracks, origins and destinations, flight numbers, aircraft types, positions, altitudes, headings and speeds. Flightradar24 uses data from the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system to track planes. ADS-B is a surveillance technology in which an aircraft determines its position via satellite navigation and periodically broadcasts it, enabling it to be tracked. The data is then displayed on the Flightradar24 website and applications.

Originally named as Plane Finder, the service was launched in 2007 by two Swedish entrepreneurs to display real-time location of flights mainly for hobbyists interested in aviation. In 2010 the company changed its name to Flightradar24 and started a paid subscription model with additional features. In just a few years the service has grown rapidly from a small hobby website to a global flight tracking service that today has more than 2 million users per day.

Flightradar24 has become very popular among enthusiasts during high profile aviation incidents/accidents such as Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (MH370/MAS370) or Germanwings Flight 9525 (4U9525/GWI18G). During these events Flight

How flight tracking works?

The live tracking system relies on collecting data from various sources and then processing it. The aircraft’s position can be estimated for up to 240 minutes after coverage has been lost.

When an aircraft is flying over an area where we have coverage, we receive its position via ADS-B signals that are periodically transmitted by the aircraft’s transponder. In most cases we also receive this information from multilateration (MLAT), which calculates the positions of aircraft without operating ADS-B transponders by measuring the difference in time it takes for the signal to reach various ground stations.

We also receive flight information directly from airlines, airports and air traffic control centers around the world. This data is used to calculate a more accurate flight path than would otherwise
