Osprey is a four-blade, twin-engine, medium-lift tandem rotor vertical takeoff and landing cargo aircraft designed by Bell Helicopter and Boeing Integrated Defense Systems (formerly Boeing Vertol). It has been used in combat and was also used to replace the CH-46 Sea Knight in the United States Marine Corps. The Osprey can take off vertically or from a short runway.

The Osprey was developed for the United States Marine Corps (USMC) starting in 1983 as the HV-22. The first flight of the Bell Boeing prototype took place on 19 March 1989. On 13 August 2007, with the designation MV-22, the Osprey was deployed for its first time in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The U.S. Department of Defense began the Joint-service Vertical take-off/landing Experimental (JVX) aircraft program in 1981, under U.S. Army leadership. The defining mission of the Marine Corps has been to perform an amphibious landing, necessitating a V/STOL capability; hence they had strong interest in this project.[citation needed] In late 1983, the Marines and Navy signed memoranda of agreement to jointly participate in the program.[6]

The JVX combined requirements

The Osprey is a high-speed, vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft. It can carry up to 24 troops with a maximum payload of 9,072 pounds (4,125 kilograms). The aircraft has a maximum speed of 270 knots (310 mph or 500 km/h), and an endurance of four hours. Equipped with four Rolls-Royce engines, the Osprey is capable of hovering at 8,000 feet (2,400 meters) in hot weather conditions.

The U.S. Army acquired the Osprey in 2011 and has deployed it to Afghanistan. It is also being used by the Royal Australian Air Force and the Canadian Armed Forces.

A version of the helicopter was also modified for use by NASA as part of its Mars Science Laboratory mission.

The Osprey is the world’s first production tiltrotor aircraft, with one three-bladed proprotor, turboprop engine and transmission nacelle mounted on each wingtip. It combines the vertical takeoff, hover, and vertical landing qualities of a helicopter with the long-range, fuel efficiency and speed characteristics of a turboprop aircraft. The U.S. Marine Corps MV-22 tiltrotor aircraft is replacing the Corps’ medium lift helicopters. This will provide the Marines with a capability to conduct amphibious assaults from ships 100 miles or more offshore, while being able to fly twice as fast, four times farther and carry three times more than current helicopters. The Air Force Special Operations Command has selected the CV-22 Osprey tiltrotor to replace its MH-53J Pave Low III fleet for long-range infiltration, exfiltration, and resupply missions of special operations forces.
