I have had a lot of fun flying airplanes in the past, but I have never had the opportunity to fly in a helicopter. I didn’t really know what to expect, and I was a little nervous about it because I am not crazy about heights. But after being in the air for just a few moments, all my fears were gone, and I started to enjoy every second of it.

Soaring over the hills near San Francisco, then flying down the pacific coast from Monterey to Half Moon Bay and on to Silicon Valley was nothing short of spectacular. It is just so different from being in an airplane. The pilot can go almost anywhere he wants, and he can turn on a dime. Because you are so much closer to everything, you can see so much more from a helicopter than from an airplane.

The helicopter we flew in was very comfortable and quiet inside, but you could also open up the doors and windows if you wanted to feel more like you were right out there in the open air. And there is no better way to get a good view of everything around you than being right up there in the cockpit with the pilot.

Our pilot David was very experienced and knowledgeable about all the places we flew over. He told us stories about many of

As many of you know, I have been a pilot for over thirty years. Upon retirement from the military, I continued my flight training and achieved my commercial instrument rating with helicopter add-on. Recently I had the opportunity to fly with a good friend and his wife on a helicopter tour up the California coast, through San Francisco and Silicon Valley, and back to San Jose. What an adventure it was!

We took off early in the morning from Reid-Hillview airport in San Jose. The weather was perfect, with winds only 5 kts out of the northwest, which are not much of a problem when flying helicopters. After crossing over the South Bay area and Moffett Field, we turned north towards San Francisco International Airport (SFO). As we approached SFO’s airspace we were switched to SFO tower frequency and were promptly cleared direct to Treasure Island Helipad (KTIQ) at 1000 feet above mean sea level (MSL). From KTIQ we flew over downtown San Francisco at 500 feet MSL until reaching the Golden Gate Bridge. We then headed into Marin County and up along the coast towards Point Reyes National Seashore Park. Along this stretch we flew over many small towns including Bodega Bay, home of Alfred Hitchcock’s

We left from a helipad in San Francisco and flew over the Golden Gate Bridge up along the coast, then back over the city. Beautiful views of the city, bay, bridges and ocean. This is a great way to see both the natural beauty of the coast, and the man-made beauty of San Francisco. The tour also takes you over Silicon Valley, where you can look down on all those tech geeks working hard to take your money. If you’re lucky, you’ll even get a glimpse at some celebrities out in their back yard or walking their dogs. You can also do charters to Napa Valley, or other destinations in Northern California.
