A Cobra helicopter gunship has two pilots, a front seat and a back seat. The front seat pilot is the aircraft commander; he tells the back seat pilot what to do. He also makes the decisions and is responsible for the lives of both pilots.

The back seat pilot flies the aircraft. This is a demanding job because the Cobra helicopter gunship is a very unstable flying machine. Without constant control inputs from the pilot, it will crash in short order.

In many situations, it becomes necessary for the two pilots to switch jobs for short periods of time. One such situation occurs when one of the pilots needs to use both hands to manipulate equipment in the cockpit and must release his control stick to get something done safely.
