This year, US News & World Report ranked Tampa International Airport (TPA) as the most affordable airport for holiday travel in the United States. The report looked at nine airline carriers serving major airports and compared roundtrip fares between November 27 and December 1 from each of those airports in the U.S. to other major airports in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America.

TPA was ranked No. 1 because of its low average fare of $1,084 for international flights and $398 for domestic flights during the holiday period.

Tampa International Airport (airport code: TPA) is the most affordable airport in the country to fly through during the major holidays, according to a new study.

The study, published by CheapFlights.com, found that Tampa International was among the top five airports in terms of savings on airfare compared to last year’s prices.

The other four cities listed were San Juan, Puerto Rico; Orlando; St. Louis; and Phoenix.

According to CheapFlights’ research, the average cost of a round-trip ticket from Tampa during Memorial Day weekend is $236 this year, compared to $249 last year (a 5 percent drop).

For Labor Day weekend, tickets are down 11 percent over last year, from an average of $268 to $238. The site defines “average” as the mean of all fares searched for on its site during a given time period.

Airport spokesperson Janet Zink says it’s important to understand that low fares are just part of the equation. If a traveler comes to Tampa airport and finds $100 in parking, or has to pay for a shuttle ride or rental car, or ends up in a hotel that has additional fees, the cost savings from flying out of Tampa can be diminished quickly.

“There are many variables that determine which airport is cheapest for travelers,” says Zink. “Some airports offer cheaper flights but have higher costs once you get there.”

According to Cheapflights’ calculations, Tampa International Airport’s average round trip fare during Thanksgiving week was $210, while it was $232 for Christmas/New Year’s week. The average holiday hotel room in Tampa costs $182 per night, and ground transportation costs an average of $22 per day.
