The Best Time to Book Your Next Flight

What day of the week are flights the cheapest?

The best time to buy domestic tickets is usually between 47-57 days in advance, according to historical data. However, this number can vary greatly depending on your destination and the time of year you plan to travel.

What is the best day of the week to book a flight?

Generally speaking, Tuesday is often considered the best day of the week to book a flight so you can find a good deal. But cheaper tickets don’t always mean better value for money.

Flight Finder: The Best Time to Book Your Next Flight

If there’s a flight you just can’t wait to book, and you know it’s going to be expensive, then by all means book it now. If you’re not tied down by a particular date or price, however, you might want to take the time to find a cheaper flight.

If you have flexibility with your travel dates, then consider booking your next trip about six weeks before your departure. Flights (on average) are about 5% cheaper around this time and tend to become more expensive as your departure approaches.

In addition, once you’ve booked your flight, check the prices for that route a few days later. Airlines are always changing their rates and will often offer discounts or sales in an attempt to fill seats on less popular flights or during off-peak hours. If there’s a cheaper flight available after you’ve made your booking, don’t be afraid to call the airline and ask them if they’ll match the lower fare. They might say yes!

‘Tis the season for Christmas travel, and if you’re like me, you haven’t booked your tickets yet. Now is the time to start looking around for the best flight deal for you and your family.

The best time to book a domestic flight is 2 months in advance, or 60 days before departure. How do I know? I analyzed nearly 3 million flights from 10 different U.S. domestic airports over the course of a year, searching on different days of the week and at different times of day to find out when booking actually matters.

Here’s what I found:

Best Time to Book a Domestic Flight

It’s no secret that booking a flight close to your departure date can get expensive quickly. However, if you book too early, you’ll pay a premium for that privilege.

The average domestic flight (within the U.S.) costs $330 roundtrip (including taxes). But by booking two months in advance, you could save an average of $60 per ticket on flights from these top 10 U.S. airports:

Washington D.C., Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, New York City, Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago O’Hare, Denver, Seattle and San Francisco

When it comes to booking cheap plane tickets, timing is everything.

If you don’t time your purchase just right, you could be missing out on hundreds of dollars’ worth of savings. There are many online tools that can help you find the lowest prices for your plane tickets.

In a recent analysis of more than 5 million flights, CheapAir.com found that the cheapest time to book your flight was 54 days before your trip—that’s almost two months in advance!

The study also found that booking too close to your travel dates is also costly. The average price difference between buying at least two months in advance and buying within two weeks of the trip was $60 per ticket, according to the report. If you want to save the most money, it’s best not to wait until the last minute.

The cheapest flights are often found by flying midweek rather than on the weekend. This is because there are fewer business travelers midweek and the airlines have to compete for their business.

There are no hard and fast rules about when to book a flight, but generally you will get the best prices if you book between two and four months in advance. The exception is usually around Christmas time.

The best day to buy domestic flights is usually Tuesday or Wednesday, but here’s a tip: When it comes to booking your flight, you might want to consider booking on a Sunday night instead of Monday morning.

The reason? Airlines often release their discounted fares late Friday evening and many competitors match these fares early Saturday morning. The result is that most of the best fares tend to be released during the weekend.

So what’s the catch? Well, it’s not always possible to know in advance when a good deal will materialize. And if you wait until departure day hoping for a good deal, you could end up paying three times as much for a seat that was available all along!
