The city of Las Vegas is the largest American city founded within the last century. Las Vegas is also the entertainment capital of the world, and it has been that way since 1946, when the first hotel/casino opened on the strip (Koloski). The first hotel was called El Rancho Vegas and it was a modest one story building with a shabby look. The only thing special about it was that it had a gambling license. However, after the El Rancho Vegas opened its doors, other hotels started to open along what are now known as Las Vegas Boulevard or “the Strip.” Some of these hotels, such as the Flamingo Hotel, were owned by famous gangsters like Bugsy Siegel. In 1959 Howard Hughes checked into the Desert Inn and never left (Koloski).

Las Vegas averages less than 5 inches of rain per year, but it also has some 300 days of sunshine. The area is part of the Mojave Desert, which is located in the southern-most part of Nevada. Temperatures can reach well over 120 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer months.

The strip is 4 miles long, and contains a majority of the city’s hotels and casinos. At the south end of The Strip is Mandalay Bay; at the north end is Stratosphere Hotel & Casino. In between are many places to gamble, shop, eat, or see shows.
