Durban, located in the southern part of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, is a beautiful mix of cultures, cuisines, people and places. With its beaches, wildlife, history and culture there is a lot to see and experience in Durban.
Durban is known for having the busiest port in South Africa and is the third largest city in the country. It was built around the Port of Durban but has since grown to be a metropolitan city with many diverse neighborhoods. It is hot and humid most of the year making it a popular tourist destination when it’s cold in Europe, Asia or North America.

1. Beaches: Durban has over 30 kilometers (18 miles) of beaches that are all open for public use. On weekdays all beaches are swimmer friendly but on weekends some beaches may have shark spotters to ensure safety of swimmers due to sharks very close to shore (due to fishermen). In addition to swimming, surfing is also popular on these beaches as well as tanning and sunbathing. The aquarium also has an interactive penguin exhibit where visitors can pet the penguins or go snorkeling with them!
2. Go Surfing at North Beach
North Beach is one of Durban’s best beaches for surfing and bodyboarding, but it’s also great for swimming too! The sand here is soft and golden-coloured which makes this beach very popular with sunbathers on hot days when there aren’t any waves breaking near shorelines like there often are elsewhere around Durban Central or New Brighton.
3. Take a Walk Along the Promenade

I don’t know if they have noticed the irony of having a shark tank in the middle of Durban. A city that is famous for its delicious onion samosas and bunny chows. A city where you can see elephants, rhinos, lions and leopards on safari. A city that has one of the busiest ports in Africa (and whose name means “harbour”).

Durban is South Africa’s third largest city after Johannesburg and Cape Town – both cities are situated on the western side of South Africa. Durban is situated on the eastern seaboard and overlooks the Indian Ocean. It’s a laid back city with an amazing vibe, a diverse population and some incredible places to visit. Which is why Durban is one of my favourite places in South Africa. I’ve been there twice already and definitely want to go back again!
