What is Desi Culture?

Desi culture is simply South Asian culture. This includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. However, there are many other countries with large South Asian populations such as the United Kingdom and the United States.

This blog is about how to incorporate Desi culture into Western cultures. For example, what are some of the best places to shop for Indian clothes in the US? Or where can you find authentic Pakistani food in the UK?

If you look at the US population, Desi (South Asian) make up the fastest growing ethnic group. With that being said, we have left a huge impact on the US. Desi culture is everywhere, from our food to music; we have made our mark. We have also left our mark in business and technology. We are lucky enough to be able to see this impact, but not every Desi has been as lucky.

This blog will be discussing what it means to be Desi in the US and how can we use our culture here to better ourselves as individuals and as a whole.

Desi culture is typical of South Asian countries and is spread out across the world. It has been incorporated in many other western cultures, especially in the US. The Desi culture incorporates many different languages such as Hindi and Urdu, along with the more mainstream English language. A traditional Desi meal consists of rice and curry, eaten with naan bread.

A very important part of Desi culture is Bollywood, which refers to the Hindi film industry that produces many musicals, dramas, and comedies. Bollywood films are loved by many people throughout India and are also becoming more popular in the western world. Many popular Bollywood actors include Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan.

There is also a large amount of Indian music produced in India every year, from classical music to popular bhangra music that is enjoyed by many people around the world. The famous sitar player Ravi Shankar contributed to incorporating Desi culture into the western world when he performed at Woodstock in 1969.
