Jet 2 is a low-cost airline based in Leeds, England. It operates scheduled and charter flights from 11 bases across the United Kingdom and the Mediterranean, carrying 6.5 million passengers in 2014. It has over 3,000 employees and is part of The Dart Group PLC which includes logistics company Fowler Welch.
Jet 2.com was established in February 2003 as a subsidiary of Dart Group PLC following the sale of Channel Express (now known as DHL Express UK) to Deutsche Post World Net for £320m. The airline’s first flight took place on 12 February 2003 from Leeds Bradford Airport with a flight to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport using Boeing 737 aircraft leased from First Choice Airways.
In June 2003, the airline acquired Farnborough-based Monarch Charter, with one Boeing 757-200 and two Boeing 737s, which were added to Jet2.com’s fleet. In December 2004, it was announced that Jet2.com would acquire Leeds based charter airline KLM UK (formerly AirUK) which had been experiencing severe financial difficulties and had entered administration earlier that year. This acquisition also included KLM UK’s Belfast International base which operated services on behalf of Flybe under a franchise agreement, enabling Jet2.com to establish itself as a scheduled operator
Jet2.com is the fastest growing leisure airline in the UK and the second largest scheduled airline in Northern England, operating over 50 routes from nine UK bases: East Midlands, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Belfast International and Edinburgh. The Jet2.com group have also just launched a new base at Blackpool International Airport and will be flying to Alicante, Faro and Palma this summer.
With more flights than any other UK airport within a 50 mile radius of Leeds & Bradford Airport (LBA), it is able to offer the best choice of short-haul destinations from West Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and North East England.
