The Black Hawk is the Army’s front-line utility helicopter used for air assault, air cavalry, and aeromedical evacuation units. The aircraft can be armed with machine guns and hydraulically operated cannons. The Black Hawk also can take on various other roles, such as: scout, command and control, search and rescue and attack helicopter.

The Black Hawk crew consists of two pilots and a crew chief. It can carry up to 11 combat-loaded Airborne troops (14 in extreme emergency) or a maximum of 6,000 pounds of cargo. The UH-60 is capable of moving a 105mm Howitzer and 30 rounds of ammunition. It can hoist up to 4,000 pounds to an altitude of 150 feet or move 16 litter patients. The aircraft has night vision goggle capabilities. It also has an infrared jammer that protects against heat seeking missiles by emitting false signals.

The Black Hawk helicopter is the Army’s primary medium lift utility helicopter. It has a crew of four — pilot, co-pilot and two crew chiefs. The aircraft can carry 11 combat-loaded air assault troops and it is capable of moving a 105mm howitzer and 30 rounds of ammunition. A single external fuel tank adds 48 miles to the Black Hawk’s range.

The UH-60 Black Hawk has seen action in Grenada, Panama, Iraq, Somalia, the Balkans, Afghanistan and other hotspots around the globe. It has been used for medical evacuations (MEDEVAC) in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.
