There are several ways to find the best airfare deals. The most common one is to search on a travel website like Expedia, Priceline, or Orbitz. This method works, but it’s not foolproof, and for many of us, it takes a lot of time that we don’t have to spare.
Sites such as Airfarewatchdog, Skyscanner and FareCompare take some of the guesswork out of the process. You can enter your departure date and destination and get an alert when there’s a price change.
Airline websites can also be good sources for flight deals. For example, Southwest Airlines often offers fares as low as $49 for flights within the United States. These flash sales usually only last for a few hours and can be very hard to predict. American Airlines also runs limited-time fare specials on its website.
Another way you can find cheap airfare is by bundling your hotel and flight into a vacation package. Sites like Expedia and Travelocity offer these packages at great prices. In addition to saving money on your flight, you can also save on your hotel when you buy a vacation package deal. By booking together, you could save up to 50% off your hotel rates.

You’ve probably seen the ads. With the right credit card, you can fly free on any airline. To make it happen, you need to “collect points” towards airline tickets. But how many points do you need?
And how do you find out? If you call an airline company directly, they won’t tell you. They also won’t tell you when their fares are lowest, or what their special deals are.
My father was a travel agent for 20 years. He used to show me his books: price lists for all the airlines, telling him what fares were available in different classes at different dates. There was even something called “yield management,” which told him where demand was highest and prices would be highest too.
But as far as I know, no one outside the industry has access to this information.
Not that it matters much anymore. For most routes, there is usually only one major airline left standing after all the mergers and bankruptcies of the last few years. Airline regulation died in 1978 and hasn’t shown signs of life since then; if anything, regulation has gotten weaker while competition has gotten fiercer (see “Southwest Airlines”). So why bother tracking ticket prices at all?
