How to Stay Hydrated on a Long Flight: A blog highlighting hydration tips for passengers.
One of the most essential things to keep in mind when you’re traveling is to stay hydrated. Whether you’re flying across the country or across the world, you need to drink plenty of fluids, as dehydration can make you feel tired and sluggish, causing your immune system to weaken and making you more susceptible to illness.1 But how much water should you drink? And how do you avoid having to constantly use the airplane bathroom? We’ve got some helpful tips!
The longest non-stop commercial flights can last around 17 hours. During that time, you might be sleeping or watching a movie but your body is still in need of hydration. You may have heard that long haul flights can make you feel dehydrated and uncomfortable. The following tips will help you stay hydrated on a long flight.
Drink Plenty of Water
Before the flight: Drink plenty of water before boarding your flight. This will ensure you are hydrated before the flight and won’t have to worry about dehydration during the flight.
During the flight: Drink water throughout the duration of your flight – it’s free! Airlines often offer bottled mineral water but some may serve tap water in a jug or glasses. Either way, keep yourself hydrated during your journey.
After the flight: Continue drinking water after you disembark from your flight – don’t stop! If your journey was longer than 8 hours, drink at least 1 litre of water for every 3 hours spent on your journey.

On a recent trip to Peru, my friends and I all brought along tablets to add to our water bottles. They worked wonderfully!
If you don’t have any purification tablets or drops on hand, try filling up your water bottle with ice or hot liquid at the airport lounge before your flight. If you are traveling internationally, do this after clearing customs and immigration while in transit to your gate.
