Travel Guide to Brussels

My travel agent suggested the Sheraton Brussels hotel, but I have stayed before at the Hilton and it was great, so I might try that one out again.

Are you enjoying it so far? I have to say I am tired right now. It’s been a long day, and we still haven’t seen all of the city! We plan to see the Atomium and the Manneken Pis tomorrow.

I’ll keep you posted as to what else we do in Belgium!

Useful apps for when you’re traveling

One of the best things about technology today is that it can make traveling easier than ever before. You don’t have to be one of those people who doesn’t know where they are going or what they are doing. You can just use your smartphone and download a few apps which will do most of the work for you while making sure that your vacation is fun, exciting and memorable.

Brussels is one of the most varied and beguiling of European cities. Not only is it the capital city of Belgium, but also the unofficial capital of Europe, home to the European Union and NATO. However, Brussels is also a beautiful medieval city with cobbled streets lined with old buildings and all manner of bars, restaurants and cafes.

The architecture of Brussels ranges from the medieval Grand Place in the centre to the more modern European Parliament building. In between you’ll find some exceptional art nouveau buildings, as well a host of other styles including gothic and neoclassical.

Brussels has plenty to keep you occupied for a weekend break or a longer holiday. If you want to spend your time exploring the sights then you’ll be able to spend at least two days doing just that. If you’re into museums then there are plenty in Brussels, ranging from art galleries to those dedicated to everything from chocolate to children’s games!

You should also allow plenty of time to relax over a coffee or beer too, as this is something that Belgians do very well!

Living in a city like Brussels, where most people work for the EU, NATO or other international institutions, one tends to travel a lot. It can sometimes be difficult to find information about a new destination and especially if you are only stopping over for one night or a weekend.

On this blog I will be sharing my experiences from my travels to try and help others make the most of their trips. Whether this is the best place to eat in town, what museums to visit or other things to do in your spare time (and even how long it takes to get there from Brussels).

For a first time traveller, it can be difficult to know what to expect from Brussels. Here are our top five tips on how to make sure your trip to Brussels is a success.

1. Prepare for the rain

Brussels is known for its unpredictable weather, so be prepared for all eventualities when you pack. We recommend taking the following:

Umbrella

Walking boots

Raincoat

The best way to get around Brussels is by foot, so bring comfortable walking shoes. There are maps available at the information desk in the Airport arrival hall. A free map and guide of Brussels is also distributed by the City of Brussels Tourist Office.

The most convenient way to get from the airport to the city center is by train. Trains leave every 20 minutes and take about 15 minutes to reach the city center. There are four stations in Brussels: Central Station (Bruxelles-Central), North Station (Bruxelles-Nord), South Station (Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel-Zuid) and Schuman Station (Schuman).

A much cheaper alternative, though not as convenient, is to take the bus from the airport to Brussels city center. Bus 12 leaves from platform C at the airport and takes approximately 45 minutes depending on traffic conditions.
