Once aloft and away from the towplane, it’s up to the glider’s pilot to find pockets of rising air and ride them like an elevator to higher altitudes. If the pilot finds no lift and is unable to reach a rising thermal, the glider will gradually lose altitude until it reaches the ground.

The most common type of lift for soaring pilots is thermals — rising columns of warm air. An abundance of lift allows a glider pilot to soar for hours, but if no lift is found, a glider pilot will usually land within an hour after release from tow.
