Today I am answering a question from one of our readers, who asked, “How often does ‘take off’ become ‘crash’ for helicopter pilots?”

The short answer is: it doesn’t happen very often. The long answer is more complicated and will be explained in the following paragraphs. I’ll start by giving a little background information.

There are two main types of helicopter accidents: pilot error and mechanical failure. Of these, pilot error is much more common. This is because most accidents involve human error rather than mechanical failure. But there are also instances where mechanical failure causes an accident, as well as situations where both factors contribute to an accident. (The following explanation will focus on accidents caused by pilot error.)

So what exactly is “pilot error”? It’s simply an action that results in an unexpected or undesirable outcome due to some kind of mistake on the part of the pilot; these mistakes can be either intentional or unintentional. The most common example is when a pilot makes a mistake during takeoff or landing, causing the helicopter to crash.

Helicopters and airplanes are both large machines used for transportation.
